Therapist Superpowers
Something you’ll hear in the therapist world sometimes is the idea of “over-saturation” or that there’s too many of us trying to do this work. And sorry but noooooooo thank u to that–because honestly, there’s only one of me. And there’s only one of you, and only one of all of us. So no matter if we treat the same things or have the same approaches or same credentials or modalities–the thing is, the only person who does this work exactly like me is me. And if you’re doing it, you’re the only one who does it like you. And everyone needs all of us to do exactly what we do exactly how we do it, because everyone needs something different. Big time vibes girlie right here. I don’t want to go to therapy and keep doing work that is hard with someone I don’t LIKE???
So what’s it like to be with me? I think I have a couple superpowers that make me me. These are the things that in the room right now, I hope my people feel and I hope defines the work that I am doing. And they’re not things I learned in grad school or special trainings: these are the things I learned in the dirt and grit of my own life and work.
Love of the game: You will find better therapists, you will find more experienced therapists: I do not think you will find one who loves it more than me. I still cry on my way to work, home from work, when I see my office, when I see a new consult request come in–and I’m not crying because I am sad or because this is hard, I am crying because it is BEAUTIFUL and I cannot BELIEVE I get to do it.
Pacing: Many folks, even those experienced with therapy work, come in wondering if they’re doing it “right.” I loooove working in this space because the best thing is: you cannot do it wrong. And, it’s not your job to figure out how to do it. My work is collaborative, and I am really good at knowing and helping us work with the pace your body wants to let us go. I am not in a rush, and also not afraid to push when I think it’s safe to do so.
No fear of the dark: Your story won’t scare me. The worst parts of your story will actually make me want to get closer to you. When you work with me: I am with you and for you. That means I go to the dark if that’s where you are, and I’m not scared of being there with you. You can’t horrify me, I do not flinch with the things you carry that you’re convinced are too much. Darkness does not diminish my hope, and I will hold it for us both for as long as it takes.
Humor: LASTLY but perhaps most importantly–laughter has saved me a million times in my life. I don’t know how to have hope without it, I don’t know how to metabolize trauma without it. I rarely go an entire session without laughing with my clients, even on our hardest days and places. If dark humor is in your toolbox: I’m ya girl!
If you’re a therapist–what’s one of your superpowers? What makes the room you’re in the best place for YOUR clients? And if you’re a client, what superpowers are you looking for?? (If they’re mine: I am still filling up my fall schedule. Consults are always free, and usually fun.)
Areas I work with: birth trauma, birth story processing, birth stories, anxiety, depression, postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, motherhood, identity, grief and loss, bereavement, infertility
